Resumen
La investigación se realiza a partir del estudio del fenómeno de la “adaptación” (en auge en nuestros días) y del término de “utopía”. Ambos conceptos se han enmarcado en un contexto que clarifica sus rasgos principales y matices, y que expone algunas de las teorías que conforman su concepción. Para la consecución de este objetivo, se han estudiado libros, artículos, tesis, materiales audiovisuales (como largometrajes y series)…y otras herramientas bibliográficas. Con todo este análisis, el objetivo se dirige hacia el estudio de la adaptación de la novela 1984 (1949) de George Orwell al cine. Las películas que han servido para ello han sido 1984 de Michael Radford, y Brazil de Terry Gilliam. La primera es una adaptación más cercana a la obra original, que traslada con gran fidelidad el texto a la pantalla. La segunda se ha inspirado en el libro de Orwell para crear un universo distópico y surrealista. Después de estudiar las películas, la resolución del trabajo se concentra en comparar la adaptación haciendo uso de lo estudiado en los dos primeros puntos. Con este trabajo se busca exponer el panorama actual tanto de la “adaptación” como de la “distopía”. Observar qué influencias tiene el cine y la literatura en nuestra sociedad, y crear un marco común ejemplificado por las obras citadas. En conclusión, la adaptación es un reto para el escritor, pues debe abstraerse, olvidarse de la obra original, para crear un producto nuevo. La distopía, se basa en la realidad, pero tiene un componente creativo tan potente, que facilita la tarea del redactor. En consecuencia, la conjunción entre adaptación y distopía es algo difícil por la falta de consenso, pero fácil por su libertad artística.
Abstract
This investigation started with phenomenon of “adaptation” (trending in our days) and the word “utopia”. Both concepts are delimited in a context that clears their basic aspects and characteristics. Therefore, I have to starting an investigation using special books, thesis, audiovisuals (like films and series), articles and other academic tools to have an idea about these terms. All in all, the real objective is to know how filmmakers have adapted George Orwell’s novel (1984, 1949) to the cinema. The movies chose are 1984 (directed by Michael Radford in 1984) and Brazil (directed by Terry Gilliam in 1985). The first movie is an adaptation closer to the original because copy literally the ambient and the text to the film. The second one is an inspiration of the Orwell’s book that pretends to create a surrealistic and dystopic world. After all, the objective is compare the films with the novel using the theories learned. Consequently, this work is pretending to expose the current situation according “adaptation” and “dystopia” concepts. I want to observe what influences have the cinema and literature in our society and create a common framework. In conclusion, the adaption is a challenge for the writer because of him must forget the original product (and disengage) to create another different and new. Talking about dystopia is based on reality but have a powerful creative component that makes easier the work of editor. As a result, the mix between adaptation and dystopia it’s something difficult to get. But easy because artistic freedom.
