Since the year 1973, Mrs. Josefina Mates had tried to achieve the foundation of Library Science Studies, but the degree was not finally approved.

In 1982, while Mr. Antonio Gallego Morell was first rector, the University applied for the foundation of the School, which was approved by the Ministery of Educational and Scientific Affairs (Real Decreto 1618/1982, June 18th).

The study plan of the University School of Granada was approved on October 27th, 1983 (BOE 15-12-83). In november 1983 the first students did their applications and the studies started in January 1984. The first lessons were given in the Palacio de las Columnas, which is located downtown (Puentezuelas street). The directors were Fernández de Viana and Jerónimo Martínez. There was a total of 139 students registered and six teachers.

In the academic year 86/87 the School was relocated to the University Campus of Cartuja, and the School was finally locatedat the building Colegio Máximo Cartuja. The directors were Antonio Ruiz Rodríguez and Félix de Moya Anegón.

In the year 1991, and according to the Real Decreto 1422/1991, August 30th (BOE 10-10-91), the official university degree of Graduate in Library Science and Documentation was established, as well as the general guidelines of the study plans which lead to the attainment of this degree. As a consequence, the new study plan was established and published on November 20th, 1994.

The new plan started to be imparted in the academic year 1995/1996. In the year 1994, the master's degree in Documentation began, whose study plan was approved on January 18th 1995. It started to be taught in the old Faculty of Library Science and Documentation (BOE 14-2-95).
